FASHFEST 2016 NEWSFLASH!

By Wendy Johnson

Designer applications are out, dates are locked in and in 2016 FASHFEST will hold more catwalk shows than ever before. The new dates for Canberra’s pre-eminent and largest fashion event are 29 September to 1 October.

Why the switch from May? Co-founder Clint Hutchinson says the change in dates was logical.

“We’re now aligned with Australia’s overall fashion calendar and the timing of ‘sister events’ such as the major weeks in Melbourne and Sydney,” says Clint. “And, let’s face it, September is warmer than May in the capital so guests can glam up, as they love to for FASHFEST, without shivering their way through the show.”

Another major change is the number of shows FASHFEST will host in 2016—six in total, with two each day. “The new dates also mean we have the time needed to prepare for the added shows. Each year we get stronger and the event gets more exciting. This year is no exception,” says Clint.

Once again, the event will be held at the National Convention Centre, powered by sound and lighting that will transform the space into something magical.

Designer applications are out now and due 14 February. Once again, FASHFEST is  throwing its weight behind local designers as well as designers from interstate and overseas, focusing on independent labels. “Last year, we had 30 designers, including Melanie Child from New Zealand, who was a big ticket item on the catwalk,” says Andrea Hutchinson, Co-founder. “So we’re encouraging a wide range of designers to apply.”

“FASHFEST is young by Australian standards and we’re still growing and maturing, learning more and more all the time”, says Andrea. “We’ve come a long way in just three years and our ability to put on more shows during this, our fourth year, is possible because of how much we’ve progressed and the creative team working with Clint and I on the event.”

Let the fashion fun begin … !

LFW will keep you posted on events relating to FASHFEST as they unfold and we’ve already locked in the dates so we don’t miss out.

Celebrating Fifty Years of (Hair)Style!

Italians certainly know how to throw a party, and, with champagne flowing, the party to celebrate 50 years of Cataldo’s Hairdressing took off on Wednesday night 2 December at Canberra Museum and Galleries. Patriarch Giuseppe Cataldo opened the original salon in Hobart Place in 1965 and over the years Cataldo’s has become one of Canberra’s top salons. LFW was there to help them celebrate 50 years in the business and meet up with the famous local stylists and some of their clients. By Aine Dowling

Lucy and Angelo Cataldo

Lucy and Angelo Cataldo

The original salon in Hobart Place was basically a barber shop with a couple of chairs for the ladies, and with young sons Emilio and Angelo helping out by sweeping the floor.  In 2015, Emilio and Angelo, along with other brother Aldo, now run the business which continues as one of Canberra’s top salons. Cataldo’s now operates two locations, one in Civic and the other in Woden which is run by business partner and 30 year Cataldo’s veteran Karen Spradau.

Through the 1960s, Cataldo’s customers would visit for their weekly shampoo and set. The 1970s was all about perming. The 1980s… big hair! And like the hairstyles they’ve created over the last 50 years, the hair business has changed a lot. Today the salon is inspired by the world’s dynamic fashion industry. “Fashion and hair are inextricably linked. You can’t have great front covers of Vogue without the hairstyles,” said Emilio Cataldo.

The salon has experienced this firsthand, with many glamourous magazine covers over the years featuring the work of Cataldo’s talented stylists. Cataldo’s has also won countless national and international awards including ACT Salon of the Year 18 years in a row. Emilio even represented Australia at the 1980 Hairdressing World Cup in Rotterdam.

While the Cataldo’s still place importance on family, with third generation Cataldo’s picking up the scissors, their idea of family isn’t limited to blood relations. “We’ve trained over 350 apprentices and stylists. Our team are very much part of our family. Some of the hairdressers we’ve trained are now educating others around the world,” said Angelo Cataldo. Emilio adds, “Education is very important to us. Not just skill with hair, but life skills, interpersonal skills they can transfer to everyday life. Our father imparted a sense of genuine customer service, which we now impart on our stylists.”

With 50 years behind them, the next 50 look just as exciting. Their Northbourne Avenue salon is moving to new premises in Ainslie Place, and their focus is the ultimate customer experience.

Virginia and Tony Pederick

Fifteen years ago, Cataldo’s Salon offered their clients free dial up internet, and TV screens for entertainment—helping them to win the Australian Best New Salon Design award. Today the Cataldo’s feel there is too much digital, and not enough genuine human interaction. “Hairdressing is now one of the few experiences people can have where there is physical contact and real conversation,” Emilio says. “The new premises will focus on that tactile experience, so our clients don’t just leave with great hair; they leave having had a relaxing, enjoyable, real experience.”

Local Fashion at Parliament House!

By Wendy Johnson

It all began when fashion designer Yumi Morrissey decided to make her own fabric prints for the collection she would launch at Fashfest 2015. That took her to the location of Australia’s most famous landmark and the meeting place of a nation—Parliament House—armed with her camera.

Scarf Parliament House

Yumi, who owns and operates the independent, local fashion label Zilpah Tart, captured ‘the shot’ she wanted while on Capital Hill and then headed to her computer to see what would happen if she manipulated it through Photoshop. After trying this and trying that she ended up with an intriguing kaleidoscope pattern and had it made into fabric for her new collection.

The exclusive Parliament Kaleidoscope print was a big hit on the catwalk at Fashfest, attracting several high-profile politicians and overseas customers to order garments created with it. Then it caught the attention of the Parliament Shop, inspiring Yumi to use the fabric to create a range of new products with the new print, including scarves, bags and cushions.

“You can’t really recognise Parliament House on the fabric from a distance but it all becomes clear when you get up close and study the pattern,” says Yumi. “That’s when it clicks that you’re looking at the building itself.” The print is a perfect fit for the shop at Parliament House and the items are great gifts for locals and the national and international tourists who make Canberra a destination. It’s unique. It’s designed here and made here, and the bags come in a range of styles ($65 to $120), some with accents of black, red and blue vinyl.

The Papillon design, for example, features blue vinyl corners, to protect the bag when it’s resting on a surface. The lining is a fun black and white polka dot cotton and the bag has an internal pocket and closes with a tab and magnetic fastener. The envelope clutch is simple and elegant, with a hand strap for easy carrying, and the large tote is a popular design.

Yumi is also producing scarves, made out of a super soft, 100 per cent cotton. They’re 190 cm long and so can be worn in several ways. They make a fabulous Christmas gift (super easy to pack up and mail also). Cushions come with the Parliament Kaleidoscope print on the front (canvas) and a solid black at the back.Zilpah Tart studio

Yumi is thrilled to be selling through Parliament Shop. “Parliament is such a significant institution and visitors to the shop include tourists from interstate and all over the worlds, so it’s giving my label exposure to new markets,” says the designer. Garments made out of the print are available through www.zilpahtart.com.au or you can visit Yumi at some of Canberra’s best markets, including those coming up in time for the ho-ho-ho season.

Fashion on the Field—what we’ve learnt so far …

LFW is off to Thoroughbred Park’s Melbourne Cup Race Day in November and we’ve been chatting to a few people, including the amazing Power of Presence guru Trish Murray, so we thought we’d pass on a few tips to get you through the day in comfort and style from top to toe—literally! And, use the opportunity to plug some of our fave local fashion designers at the same time.

Myer Fashion on the Field

Wear a hat, or fascinator, or even a hatinator … but definitely wear something on your head. Wearing a hat serves two purposes—it looks good, it saves your hair if it’s a windy day, and provides shade on a hot day … OK that’s three. Plus, it’s almost THE LAW to wear something on your head at the races. Check out these stunning designs from Sovata (right), BM Designs, and spring floral bands from PeonynPearl (see images below).

Wear a dress. Forget the pants—leave those to the guys—and get a nice dress. Preferably not too much cleavage (note: from Myer Fashion on the Field ‘a predominance of exposed skin is not classed as classic race wear’), and unless it’s pushing 40 degrees celcius cover your shoulders—you don’t want sunburn the next day and you don’t want to be constantly hoisting up skinny straps that slide down. Come to think of it, if it is 40 degrees even more reason to cover your shoulders, and a nice light short jacket or shrug style is perfect. Who can forget the famous Parliament House dress by Zilpah Tart? Check out her gorgeous spring/summer Bloom Collection.

Get some colour. You can add pizazz to monochrome with colourful shoes or bag, or stick to black and white and go wild and colourful with your head wear. According to Vogue (the guru of all fashion) spring/summer colours are lemon, tangerine, strawberry pink, subtle greens, bright blues, and hot peach.

Summer colours -

Summer colours …

Get a nice clutch bag—one that comes with a slender detachable shoulder strap is handy for après races. You don’t need to cart around a big tote or handbag. Get a clutch that will hold a small purse, phone, lippy, keys, and a couple of tissues. The lovely Sash & Belle has a great selection of clutches and small handbags just perfect for the event.

Don’t overdo the jewellery! You can sparkle without covering yourself in bling. Coco Chanel had this great tip ‘before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take something off’. I think she meant jewellery … yeah, she did.

Legs. To tan or not to tan. To wear stockings or no stockings. It’s always the legs … Seriously though, if you wear sandals then forget the stockings, and if it’s scorching hot definitely forget the stockings. If you absolutely must get a spray tan make sure you do it a couple of days before so it has time to calm down a bit. Alternatively, you can just get a good quality over-the-counter fake tan. We recommend Ambre Solair or Le Tan, both of which are easy to apply and give a nice subtle tint.

L-R: Wedge sandals by I Love Billy, Missano, Top End

Wear wedge heels. They’re more comfortable on grass and uneven surfaces, and offer a bit more support if you’re standing for long periods. Spindly heels are definitely a no if you’re on soft surfaces! Sandal wedges with an ankle strap are trendy, comfy, and look great.

and finally … get your toes done! Polished toes are a must in sandals.

So there you have it. LFW race tips—from top to toe!

Printing 3D Fashion

Although the audience wasn’t aware, some of the fashion on the runway at Fashfest was made with a 3D printer. Yes, a printer. What happened to making good old paper patterns and cutting fabric with good old scissors you ask? Welcome to the world of fashion in 2015 and beyond. By Wendy Johnson.

Organisations like the Australian 3D Manufacturing Association (A3DMA) and Engineer 3D are on to the infinite possibilities of this new-age technology. So too are an increasing number of fashion designers like those behind the label Mimetic, Melissa Pompeani and George McWilliam, and MAAK, Charne Esterhuizen, who are all recent graduates from the Canberra Institute of Technology.

Without getting technical, 3D manufacturing is the production of a physical object from a digital design. Today’s machines can make objects from almost any material, including plastic, glass, steel, and ceramics. Some items take an hour to produce and others much longer—depending on size and complexity. A shoe, for example, can take up to eight hours. A simple piece of jewellery much less.

Birds in the Nest at Cooma!

It’s no secret that we loved Belle Bird designs at this years’ FASHFEST, so a bit of further investigation found us in snowy Cooma earlier this week to check out Birdsnest—which includes Belle Bird, That Bird Label, Birdkeepers, and Boho Bird as well over 200 other labels in the store. By Aine Dowling.

Bird lounge

Birdsnest is the brainchild of Jane Cay who set up the small store in 2004, going online in 2008. Since that time the company has increased from four staff (birds) to over 100; has just completed its third revamp of the now much larger store; is on its fourth website upgrade, and carries over 200 labels. Over the June long weekend Birdsnest is celebrating the opening of its Thredbo store specialising in alpine winter wear, and stocking the local Snow Angel label.

We met up with Birdsnest PR guru, Tan Ward, who gave us a guided tour of the store, the backrooms, the two warehouses—one of which was the former Woolworths supermarket—as well as a rundown on the business. But before the hows and whys of Birdsnest, let’s tell you about the store itself. It’s huge; it’s modern; it’s bright, and it’s classy. Oh, is it classy! Forget about racks of clothes all over the shop and squeezing to a change room the size of a laundry cupboard—this place is amazing! To say we were hugely impressed is an understatement! This is a business that truly puts its customers first—both in the store and online—from its laptops and iPads in the store and change rooms, to its 24 hour delivery turnaround across Australia.

Birdsnest change rooms and suite

Birdsnest change rooms and suite

Here’s how it works when you buy in store. There is one item of everything in the store—in one colour, and one size. So, you really like the size 8 grey cropped pants but you’re after something in black in a 12 or 14; no problem. Just hop onto the laptop, select the garment, click your colour and size, type in your name and hit enter. Then check the Arrivals board. In less than a minute your garment will come up as ‘in flight’, and within a couple of minutes your garment arrives on the rack in the change room with the Arrivals board changing to ‘landed’. Seriously, how cool is that! We loved it! And if the garment isn’t the perfect fit once you’re in the change room, get on the iPad and simply request another size. Now that’s customer service.

Some of the 200 brands in stock at Birdsnest

Some of the 200 brands in stock at Birdsnest

That’s the store. But the store is only a part of Birdsnest—out the back is where the action is. The office (if you can call it that) is vast open area designed in sections for customer service, packing and despatch, returns, accounts, designers and stylers, creators and writers, social media, the warehouse team, and its own photographic studio where the images taken are used in both their online and print publications including their catalogues and newsletters.

Buying online is just about as precise as you can get it by building your own customer profile when you sign up. You can choose your body shape (boobs, tummy, arms and legs), your personality (classic, modern, boho), your lifestyle (party girl, yummy granny, career, active, lady of leisure), and what colours and brands you would, and wouldn’t, wear. Within five minutes you’ll receive your own personalised style pack, and future emails and sales notifications are designed to fit your profile.

According to Tan Ward the Birdsnest online store is 94 per cent of their business. “When the orders come in we pack and send then off the same day,” says Tan. “We pack over 500 parcels a day and Australia Post picks up every day at 4.30pm, and during our busiest times it’s all hands on deck and every staff member will be packing. We also put a little thank-you gift in the bag with a handwritten card. We keep a record of all customer purchases, and we operate an awards program on the dollar spend.” If you live in the area you can also shop online and request an in store pickup instead of delivery.

Don’t like something you’ve ordered? Return it. “We have a full returns policy for all customers—no questions,” says Tan. “We want our customers to be happy and if they don’t like something they need to tell us so we can rectify it. The Birdsnest culture, customer focus, and teamwork is really important to us. It’s also important that this philosophy flow on to our customer base.”Bird3

Happy customers are involved at Birdsnest more than you may realise. When you purchase an item from That Bird Label you are automatically on the ‘design’ team. You have a vote on future garments, and if the general consensus is that those grey crop pants you really liked would be more comfortable with a soft stretch waist insert at the back, then the next design may well include it. “We listen to what our customers say, what they want and what they like, and our design team have often made changes to a garment if enough customers suggested it.”

Birdsnest is not just another retail fashion shop. It’s a whole new and exciting shopping experience. Give it a try—we guarantee you’ll love it!

360 header Three Sixty Fashion Market, aka 360FM, opened up shop in the Kingston Fitter’s Workshop in October 2014 and is already becoming the place for ethical, sustainable, and vintage (pre-loved) clothing and accessories. Its location is ideal—smack between the Canberra Glassworks and The Old Bus Depot Markets—attracting visitors from both, as well as standing on its own as a unique outlet for bargain designer items.

LFW paid its first visit to the busy market on Sunday and we were impressed with the range of goods on offer. The pre-loved stuff is very high quality but not high-priced; verified by the lovely Fletcher Jones tartan kilt I picked up for less than $40 at Hummingbird Vintage. There are a number of former FASHFEST designers there including Dissonance, and Audrey Blue, plus hand-made jewellery from Peonynpearl, bags from Sash & Belle, candles, and books and toys.

Here’s a snapshot of what’s on offer. Check 360FM website for their next market day.
