Hustle&Scout – Bigger and Better!

The Market; the Bling; the Newbies, and the Favourites!

By Wendy Johnson

When Hustle&Scout hit the capital, it did so with a bang. And ever since that packed-out inaugural event, Canberrans have flocked to the Twilight Market to, well, hustle and scout for fabulously designed and, more often than not, hand-made clothing, jewellery and more.

The next market, 11 April, is the third that founder Tegan McAuley will hold at the expanded premises in Fairbairn and it promises to be the biggest and most entertaining. Planning is also underway, as if Tegan isn’t busy enough, for the first Hustle&Scout in Hobart, to be held at the gorgeous Long Gallery and Sidespace Gallery, Salamanca Arts Centre during the weekend of 20 and 21 June.

But back to Canberra soil. All up 63 designers will showcase their wares at Hustle&Scout. This includes 21 new stall holders, some Canberra-based and some from interstate, and five designers who will launch new collections on the runway at FASHFEST.

Tickets for Canberra’s most glamorous annual fashion event are on sale now and selling sizzling hot.

By Wendy Johnson (for LFW)

When asked why she wanted to participate in FASHFEST, even though it means lugging a mountain of garments and other paraphernalia all the way from Melbourne, Mariska Thynne didn’t skip a beat. The fashion designer behind the label The Professor’s Daughter, has a sister who lives in the capital—a sister who attended FASHFEST last year.

“My younger sister and I go to a lot of fashion events together, including in Melbourne and Sydney,” she says. “Last year she went to FASHFEST and told me how fabulous it was. She said it was more of a spectacle and a curated show, not just a parade.

FASHFEST is a spectacle. This year will see four days of entertainment, featuring new collections by more than 30 designers, worn by around 80 models walking to the beat of music by 14 live musicians, covering a wide range of genres, from rap to jazz. Read on to find out how this spectacle works, who pulls it together, and view the Faces of FASHFEST. Continue reading

Racing for Time…

HeartKids Hillclimb Car Race, Canberra 22 March

If you’re into fast cars and racing check out the HeartKids Hillclimb race on Sunday 22 March at Fairbairn. And when race drivers will peel their way around the sealed, 1km tarmac race track at Fairbairn they won’t be just competing to win, they’ll also be raising funds for the HeartKids Hillclimb event (free public spectator access).

HeartKids Hillclimb features time trial car racing action with opportunities for kids to ride around the track—slowly—in a race car. The event started in 2009 and has raised about $45,000 to date. Funds are raised through entry fees, sponsorships from business, raffle ticket sales, and food and drink sold on the day to participants and spectators.

The race track out at Fairbairn winds up and around a big hill. The event is a time trial so there’s one race car on the track at a time with race times posted on a large screen. For the HeartKids Hillclimb event, the 40 race car drivers involved do two laps with the fastest driver winning.

HeartKids Hillclimb is run by local photographer Daniel Cummins in honour of his little brother, Will, who would have been 27 this year. But Will passed away at age 12, after the heart defect he had since birth became too much for his body to take.

To honour his brother’s memory, Daniel started HeartKids Hillclimb, an event unique to the ACT. It’s held each year to raise awareness, funds and support for those with childhood heart disease. The drugs and technology used for the type of illness Will suffered have come a long way, but ongoing research and funding support is needed. HeartKids ACT and NSW join forces to raise funds.

But why a car race?

Will was passionate about racing cars. He had a collection of 100 matchbox cars and a Playstation car racing game. “Getting his learner’s licence and driving a cool black car was the last thing we spoke about,” says Daniel, “but Will never made it.”

Daniel will also be racing—in his cool, black race car.

Canberra sponsors of HeartKids HillClimb 2015 are: Tongue and Groove, Ox Eatery, Gus’ Café, The Hospitality Store, Duxton, Drive GHT.

Canberra’s Healthy Breakfasts!

In our Year of Eating Healthy we’re looking at café breakfasts around Canberra. We’re huge fans of a good breakfast, and any café who can do the perfect poached egg—which is not as easy as you might think; offers a gluten free option on the toast, and has the nous to offer an all-day breakfast, gets our vote. Surprisingly the latter are thin on the ground with most places moving to lunch around 11.30am, and in our opinion a good breakfast for $15 or so, is much (much) better value than lunch for upwards of $20, so a big tick from LFW to those who offer all day breakfasts.

Cool Canberra Jazz …

… In the Vines Grape_Vine02

In a past life I was somewhat involved in music and jazz and performed around the Canberra region. Earlier this year I visited the Merimbula Jazz Festival (for a jazz hit and a bit of nostalgia), and found a few terrific Canberra performers well worth seeing if you get the chance. My original article appeared in Surya Magazine, but I’ve been following these bands and thought it was time to update their news, and flag some upcoming awesome gigs, and special events, including a few at local wineries!

Fresh food – fresh cookbook!

The Capital Region Farmers Market EPIC is launching its very own cookbook on 1 November!

The Market is operated by the Rotary Club of Hall, and celebrated 10 years of operation this year. The very first Market was held in March 2004 and was established without any financial support or grants from governments or other sources, and had just 18 stalls and around 1,000 customers. Today the Market turns EPIC into a blaze of colour and a hive of activity with almost 200 registered stallholders hosting around 100 stalls, and welcomes over 5000 customers each week.

National Arboretum Canberra

The devastating Canberra fires of 18 January 2003 not only took four lives, injured over 400 people, and destroyed 500 homes and Mount Stromlo Observatory in western Canberra, but also took out 70 per cent of Canberra’s pastures, forest and pine plantations, and nature parks. Ten years on in 2013, and the same year as Canberra’s centenary, the National Arboretum opened its doors to the public. Stretching over 250 hectares (over 600 acres) with views over Lake Burley Griffin, the Tuggeranong Valley, Molonglo and the distant Brindabella Ranges—the Arboretum commemorates 100 years of Canberra history, and standing on a site of one of the original pine plantations has also become a symbol of the 2003 bushfire recovery program.

The Arboretum also represents Canberra planner Sir Walter Burley Griffin’s vision for a place of trees, shrubs and plants for the purpose of conservation, preservation, education and display, and is home to 94 forests of rare, endangered and symbolic trees from Australia and around the world, and over 48,000 trees are growing across the site.
