Tropical Sunrise

Tropical Sunrise may sound like a cocktail—come to think of it, it probably is—but this is about actual tropical sunrises on the gorgeous tropical island of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Here are a few shots for you to enjoy. Meitaki Ma’ata!

Sunrise on the reef and a calm lagoon

Sunrise on the reef and a still lagoon

Waking early one morning on our recent visit, I happened to glance out of the window overlooking the lagoon and saw a very pretty sunrise. Toying with the idea of going back to bed—it was 6.30am after all, and I was on holiday—it then occurred to me that I should be a bit pro-active and take the shot. Even though it probably meant I’d then have to rise at 6.30am every day to take similar shot.

While I can’t admit to rising at 6.30am every day, when I did, I did so to some great sunrises, and when I was somewhat tardy and up an hour later, I still managed to get a deserted beach, calm lagoon, and peaceful stillness.

Apples with Rhythm

LFW took a drive out to the country on the weekend, and joined the sunshine, crowds, apples, and music at Loriendale Orchard Apple Day on Saturday 1 April.

loriendale-orchard-apple

Image: Apple and Pear Australia Limited

Loriendale is a boutique orchard with over 120 varieties of apples, as well as selection of nectarines, peaches, nashi pears, berries and nuts. The orchard runs organic best practice, which means that the fruit actually tastes like the fruit you may remember from your childhood, before all the GM, gassing, spraying, and cold storage. Apple pies, toffee apples, jams, jellies, chutneys, sauces and relishes were also on offer, together with amazing apple based afternoon teas for just a few dollars.Loriendale peach jam

The farm was purchased by the Pidgeon family in 1982 but it wasn’t until around 1997 that the apple and cherry trees were planted, and the orchard was established. The farm is also a WWOOF (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) hosting farm; providing the opportunity for young people, from around the world, to live and work on the farm and learn about agriculture, farming, and a bit of Australian culture.

But, one of the best things about the Apple Day was sitting in the sun with our afternoon tea, and listening to some cool jazz from local group Rhythm Syndicate. This great vocal group has been performing in Canberra and the region since 1990, and offers a mix of cool jazz, gospel, classics, and popular.

The mixed group sings in four-part harmony, accompanied and a cappella, and includes talented muso and vocalist Paul Herbert on harmonica and flute, brilliant pianist and composer Mike Dooley, and is pulled together by director and conductor Camilo Gonzalez. You can hear them next at the Merimbula Jazz Festival over the June long weekend.

NEXT!

Beautiful, wearable hair. It’s every woman’s dream, whether that dream is for a subtle cut and colour or a head-turning cut and colour, you want it to the highest of standards, and designed just for you.Next1

If anyone gets this, it’s Canberra’s Leslie Henshaw, from Next Hair, who has just won Salon Stylist of the Year, Australian Hair Industry Awards.

“Colour is fabulous. It’s a great confidence booster for a client, who walks out of the salon with their head held high and feeling like a new person,” says Leslie. “It’s also a dynamic and exciting component of the industry for me as a professional.”Next3

Leslie’s passion about styling and colour hair runs deep and he’s done Canberra proud by winning this national title. Not only does Leslie show his talent as Head Colourist and Senior Stylist at Next, he does through his work as an educator in training—across Australia and in Hong Kong, China and the Philippines. His education and training work has culminated in another big win. Leslie has just self-published The Hair Colour Bible, a rich industry resource on in-depth colour theory and techniques.Next2

Leslie’s work is amazingly diverse and he works incredibly hard at refining his unique style and technique. Throughout his career, Leslie has completed more than 140 professional photo shoots. He’s worked with industry icons, award-winning photographers, top models and dozens of fashion designers, including several who have been spotted on the catwalk at FASHFEST. Indeed, Leslie himself has lent his talent to the event, working backstage at FASHFEST one year. And he’s worked on many other runway shows, including for the big guns like Wayne Cooper.

Leslie’s work has been published extensively in Canberra, nationally and overseas. One example is his Chromatophores collection, which has been published 42 times internationally, including in artCoiffure Russia and disconnect (Hong Kong).Next4

And last, but not least, Leslie generously donates his time to travel to the Philippines as a volunteer for Hair Aid, a not-for-profit organisation that provides hair-cutting training for low-income individuals, helping them to develop livelihood skills.

Keen on a new cut or colour? Whether you wear it long, short, sleek or curly, classic or quirky … you can find Leslie at Next Hair in Braddon. 62472062.

Illuminating Canberra!

When you buy a piece from Illuminate, you’re buying a piece of Canberra. Not just because the fashion designer behind local label Zilpah tart creates all her pieces here, but because the patterns are based around photos of three of our much-loved national institutions.

ZT_Radience Dress Film Sound Archive

Radiance Dress – National Film and Sound Archive print

You must look closely at the patterns before it clicks, but that’s all part of the fun, says Yumi Morrissey, and Illuminate reflects what happens to the capital after dark.

The inspiration for Zilpah tart’s new autumn/winter 2017 collection came from an image Yumi took of the Torsional Wave at Questacon at Enlighten a few years back. She immediately saw a pattern in her head, using the electric blue coloured light that was projected onto the sculpture.

Yumi manipulates her images on the computer to create a pattern, which is then digitally printed onto fabric. Patterns resulting from two other national institutions—the National Museum of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archives—are also part of Illuminate, with Yumi loving the bright orange entry wall at the museum and the vibrant rainbow colours projected onto the archives.

The garments Yumi has designed with her exclusive new patterns include her top sellers such as the T-shirt Dress and Cross Front Dress, but this time she has also introduced a line-up of skirts, tops and a spunky steel jacket made from metallic silver double knit stretch fabric. Her highly popular and easy-to-wear loop scarves are also available.

Illuminate isn’t the first collection to celebrate Canberra’s national icons. Yumi made waves in 2015 when she launched the Warrior collection at FASHFEST, with patterns based around Parliament House. She’s also launched collections around images she’s captured of other aspects of our beautiful capital, including Civic Fountain, Balloon Spectacular, glorious sunsets, vibrant autumn leaves, cherry blossoms and more. Have some fun and check out the fabric prints section of Yumi’s website, which displays all original photos, resulting patterns and garments made with the patterns. It’s fascinating!

Zilpah tart has showcased at FASHFEST three times and is already thinking well ahead to 2017 where she’ll launch her spring/summer collection.

She’s also super busy getting ready to showcase Illuminate on the catwalk at the CARDIF Collective Fashion Alley show, to be held 8 April, Highgate Lane, Kingston. This charity event will also showcase autumn/winter collections by Hunter the Label, Fujinella, Hoon and Thunder Thighs.  For more information, including on tickets: www.cardifcollective.com.au

Autumn has graced us with its presence. This change of season is exciting for the way the leaves change to brilliant oranges, reds and yellows, but also because it’s a chance to layer up and change the way we dress.

CARDIF 1

Zilpah Tart 2016 Collection

The first-ever CARDIF Collective Fashion Alley, to be held 8 April in Highgate Lane, Kingston, will celebrate the autumn/winter collections of five designers. The fashion show will style the service laneway into something magical, with the help of event experts Show Pony. Guests will be introduced to a new Canberra label by Bronwynne Jones, who designs for women who are perfectly pear shaped and proud of it. “Thunder Thighs is about fitting and flattering. If you love your shape, then focus on fit and flaunt it,” says Bronwynne, who has created a foundation wardrobe and pieces that add flair.

A new collection by Hoon will jazz up the runway with kid’s clothing. This up-cycled fashion label by artist Hanna Hoyne is delightful, colourful and unique. Hanna creates these special pieces from her design studio in CARDIF Collective.

While the fashion show focuses primarily on local designers, it also showcases the latest collection by Melbourne-based Fujinella, available in Canberra solely through CARDIF Collective. Fujinella focuses on monotones, making pieces easy to mix and match. They fit into any woman’s wardrobe and are delightful to wear.

Zilpah Tart new 2017 collection: Illuminate, using National Museum of Australia print

Two favourite designers showcased at FASHFEST 2016, Zilpah Tart and Hunter the Label, are launching new and exciting season collections. Armed with her camera, Yumi Morrissey has over time captured images of three of our cultural icons, manipulating them on her computer and then producing fabric. The pieces in Zilpah Tart’s Illuminate collection feature the National Museum of Australia, National Film and Sound Archives and Torsional Wave at Questacon.

Local fashion designer, Sara Wurker, was inspired to create her new season collection by a trip to Japan. Sara’s Hunter the Label focuses on quality fabrics and wearable designs that embody unassuming elegance. The Norwegian Wood collection promises to make a true statement on the catwalk.

Guests will also see shared segments showcasing pieces by many more designers who retail through CARDIF Collective.

The CARDIF Collective Fashion Alley is a charity event with proceeds from a live charity auction (Richard Luton of Luton Properties the auctioneer) going to the Heart Foundation. Proceeds from the silent auction will support domestic violence through the Lost and Found initiative by boyandgirlco.

A free art exhibition will also be held, with works by artists who create out of M16 Artspace.

Tickets for the CARDIF Collective Fashion Alley are on sale now. General entry tickets are $35. Gallery tickets are $50, VIP singles $70 and VIP tables are $250 for four and $350 for six. www.cardifcollective.com.au

Tea with Giorgio Armani

Afternoon tea is something rather special at the Tea Lounge at the Hyatt Hotel and has all the inclusions you would expect with cucumber sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, and slices, cakes and pastries, plus newbies such as light-as-air macarons, fluffy mousse, and light and creamy panna cotta.20170211_123110

Afternoon tea was introduced in England in 1840 and included thinly sliced sandwiches, scones, and dainty little cakes, and became a fashionable and social event in society; later moving from the drawing room into hotels such as the Ritz, Claridges, and the Savoy. And here in Canberra, the Hyatt Hotel has risen to the challenge, to the extent that when we now think about afternoon tea we choose the Hyatt first. And that’s just what we did.20170211_120522

Catching up with blog friend Ink and Leathers for a chat about food, fashion and life in general, we took ourselves off for afternoon tea at the Hyatt Hotel on one of the hottest days in Canberra, but before we’d had a chance to inspect the cucumber sandwiches we discovered we were there on the same day as Giorgio Armani! Well, the brand at least.

So while we nibbled on our ribbon cucumber sandwiches, miniature filled brioche, and tiny pies and pastries, we were treated to a top-end fashion show at the same time. Designers such as Armani have a limited presence in Canberra, so to see the creative style and elegance of this famous designer—up close and personal, so to speak—was very exciting.20170211_114002-1

Armani Collezioni includes tailored outfits, sportswear, evening wear, and accessories with a hint of corporate, for both men and women, and the Spring-Summer 2017 Collection features many Armani signature elements with gorgeous fabrics, clean lines, stunning colours, and exceptional detail, fit and finish. Having never owned a piece of Armani (and unlikely to do so …), I didn’t necessarily think the clothing would be my style, but in all honesty the collection would suit any age and any size, and will take you from work, to play, and on to dinner, and even … afternoon tea at the Hyatt!20170211_115137-1

This is the second time in recent months that I have indulged in afternoon tea at the Hyatt, and, notwithstanding the outstanding work of the Hyatt chefs and their teams, much credit must go to Hotel Marketing Communication Manager, Avon Dissanayake. Avon is working with a wide range of fashion designers, agencies, musicians, social media influencers, dancers, and photographers to create Luxury is Personal for all Hyatt guests—be they staying guests or visitors to The Tea Lounge or Promenade Cafe. His passion for fashionxhyatt events, and their success, is infective—so stay tuned for more exciting happenings from the Hyatt in 2017.20170211_114942-1

HeartKids HillClimb, Fairbairn

By the LFW team

Here at LFW, we truly believe Canberrans are a marvellous bunch. We’re surrounded by lots of local heroes who do wonderful things for our community, including by raising awareness and funds for important causes. Like Daniel Cummins and a cause that is near and dear to his heart—that cause is one of the greatest killers of those under the age of 1 in this country—childhood heart disease.hearhill-kids-3

Daniel’s brother, Will, survived until the tender age of 12 with complex, chromosome syndrome. He was born premature with the debilitating condition, but could only fight for so long. In some ways, Will, and his family, were fortunate to be together for that long. You see, eight babies are born with a heart defect every day in Australia and four lives are lost every week. Daniel is the first to say that the drugs and technology used for childhood heart disease have come a long way but much more is needed. And so he started HeartKids HillClimb to raise funds and help in his own way.

Since 2009, the event has raised a whopping $65,000 ($10,000 last year alone). The funds are used for support, awareness, research and advocacy.heartkids-hill-1

In 2017, HeartKids HillClimb, now in its eighth year, will be held on Sunday 19 February at Fairbairn Park Hillclimb Track. It’s free and a fabulous family day out. Around 45 race car drivers will zoom around the 1km tarmac race track at Fairbairn, competing in time trials, with results posted on a massive screen. Every driver does two laps with the fastest winning. If you’re not a race car fan, HeartKids HillClimb still has lots on offer, including face painting and other family activities. The race car drivers are also kind enough to give kids the thrill of a life time by taking them for slow laps around the track.

But why a race car driving event to raise funds? “Will was passionate about cars, any cars, but definitely fast ones,” says Daniel. “He never stopped talking about them and adored his collection of 100 matchbox cars and his Playstation car racing game. Getting his learner’s licence and driving a cool black car was the last thing we spoke about.” At HeartKids HillClimb Daniel races his cool black car in Will’s honour. HeartKids ACT and NSW work together to raise funds for childhood heart disease. The Canberra event raises money through competitor entry fees, sponsorships, raffle ticket sales, and food and drink sold on the day.hearthill-kids-4

So if you’re not doing anything on Sunday 19 February, head to Fairbairn Park Hillclimb Track, Sutton Road, 9am to 4pm. In the meantime, follow the action on the event Facebook page.

Stone the Fruit!

Have you notice how good Aussie stone fruits are at the moment? Peaches, plums, nectarines, mangoes, and cherries—so yum, and so good! But you can do so much more with stone fruit than popping them in a fruit salad, so we’ve sourced some great recipes to take you right through the day—from breakfast to mains and dessert—and get your daily intake of three pieces of fruit at the same time! We’ve also included veggie/vegan options for the salads and dessert. You’re welcome!

Breakfast

muesli-with-nectarine-and-pomegranate

Best Aussie breakfast with best Aussie fruit!

Muesli with nectarines and pomegranate is a super-easy and super-booster start to the day. Just get your favourite muesli and add slices of nectarine, pomegranate seeds*, and passionfruit pulp, and top with dollop of natural yoghurt. Delish! Vegans can find Kingland vegan yoghurt in Canberra at selected Coles Supermarkets.

*If you’ve never tried pomegranate, all you do is cut them in half and scoop out the seeds. But remember to remove all the yellow pith around the seeds as it’s very (very) bitter and will put you off ever having pomegranate again … not to mention ruining your muesli …

Main—Baked salmon or chicken with nectarine salad

baked-salmon-with-peaches-and-avocado-salad

Baked salmon with peaches and salad

Roast your chicken as normal, and bake the salmon as per our recipe in Seven Days of Eating Healthy, and serve with poached peaches or nectarines, or one of our great salads below.

Salads and sides—Nectarine salad

roast-chicken-with-nectarine-salad-and-potato-wedges

Roast chicken with nectarine salad and potato wedges

You will need one nectarine and a couple of large radish per person, plus a few rings of Spanish onion. Cut the nectarine into quarters then in half again, thinly slice the radish, and onion, add the dressing, and gently toss together in a large bowl. Decorate with a bit of greenery—rocket or baby spinach leaves. This salad takes a light oil and lemon dressing really well. Just add two tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil, one tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and a teaspoon of white wine vinegar in a bowl, and whisk together until well blended.

Rice salad with mango—serves 2

thai-rice-with-mango

Thai rice salad with Aussie mangoes

This salad looks and tastes terrific, and you can give it a Thai kick by adding a teeny amount of finely chopped chilli in your dressing. For two people we used 2 cups of cooked rice, and 3 cooked Tiger prawns each. Cook your rice as normal and set aside to cool. Slice up some cucumber, red (Spanish) onion, and lightly steamed green beans. Then cut your Tiger prawns (tails off) in half lengthways and toss the veggies and prawns into the rice. Add lemon dressing (see above) and finely chopped chilli (optional) and mix well. Decorate with nice cubes of fresh mango and a bit of coriander. Vegetarians and vegans can substitute lightly steamed mushrooms and sprigs of broccolini for the prawns.

Dessert (serves 2 – 3)

plum-crumble-tart-2

Individual plum crumble—serve with cream or ice-cream

This is a really simple take on your regular apple crumble. We made individual plum tarts but you can easily adjust the recipe to make a large one. You can also use peaches instead of plums. You will need one plum per ramekin. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees Celcius. Slice the plums (no need to peal, but you might prefer to peal the peaches) and place in the ramekin. In a bowl, rub together ½ cup of SR flour (wholemeal or GF if you prefer), ¼ cup raw sugar, pinch of cinnamon (optional), and 4 tablespoons of cold butter*, until it resembles large crumbs—alternatively, you can throw everything in the food processor and whiz until crumbed—then spoon onto the plums. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the plums are soft when tested with a skewer, and serve immediately with cream and/or ice cream.  Delish!

*Vegans can buy Honest to Goodness coconut butter online, or from Ainslie IGA, and Over the Moo vegan ice-cream from Evatt IGA, Twenty One Café and Groceries in City West, or check Over the Moo website for other outlets.
